A little history
Artificial turf was first developed by Monsanto and used in Major League Baseball in the Houston Astrodome in 1966. It was again used in 1969 at Franklin Field, University of Pennsylvania for American football. These early grasses were generally made from nylon and were fairly course, earning a reputation for friction burns.
British soccer club, Queens Park Rangers used a second generation grass in 1981. This and a number of other UK pitches were made from Polypropylene with a 20 to 40 mm pile and stabilised with sand in fill.
Grass technology evolved into the 1990’s with the advent of a much softer Polyethylene fibre and a wider variance of pile lengths (up to 65 plus mm for sports using studded boots). Additionally a number of the “contact sports” also introduced Shock Pads (rubber underlay) to dampen impacts. These are not suitable for sports such as tennis.
Polyethylene is softer, more durable and does not “friction burn” and is therefore our exclusive choice for virtually all sports.
